Waupun, Wisconsin

Waupun is a city in Dodge and Fond du Lac counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 11,340 at the 2010 census.[6] Of this, 7,864 were in Dodge County, and 3,476 were in Fond du Lac County. In Fond du Lac County, the Town of Waupun abuts the city of Waupun.

Waupun comes from the Ojibwe word "Waubun" which means "dawn of day."[7] In fact Waupun was originally supposed to be named "Waubun" but the State of Wisconsin made a spelling error, and Waupun never bothered to change it.

Waupun was founded in 1839 by Seymour Wilcox, the first settler along the Rock River in what was then deciduous forested land. The territorial Census in 1847 showed Waupun Township to have a population of 956. In 1851, the city was chosen for the State Penitentiary, owing to the abundance of limestone for construction. The main building, constructed in 1854, is still in use. The population in 1940 was 6,725.

Wild Rose, Wisconsin

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.55 square miles (4.01 km2), of which, 1.53 square miles (3.96 km2) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 725 people, 316 households, and 174 families residing in the village. The population density was 473.9 inhabitants per square mile (183.0/km2). There were 377 housing units at an average density of 246.4 per square mile (95.1/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.9% White, 0.7% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 1.8% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the population.

There were 316 households of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 44.9% were non-families. 42.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.78.

Wausau, Wisconsin

Wausau is a city in and the county seat of Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The Wisconsin River divides the city into east and west. The city's suburbs include Schofield, Weston, Maine, Rib Mountain, Kronenwetter, and Rothschild.

As of the 2010 census, Wausau had a population of 39,106.[4] It is the core city of the Wausau Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which includes all of Marathon County and had a population of 134,063 at the 2010 census.

This area was occupied for thousands of years by succeeding cultures of indigenous peoples. The historic Ojibwe (also known in the United States as the Chippewa) occupied it in the period of European encounter. They had a lucrative fur trade for decades with French colonists and French Canadians. After the French and Indian War this trade was dominated by British-American trappers from the eastern seaboard.

Williams Bay, Wisconsin

Williams Bay is one of three municipalities on Geneva Lake. It was named for Captain Israel Williams[6] of Massachusetts, who, with several of his sons, settled in the area in 1837. Much of the surrounding area was settled in the early 19th century by surveyors plotting roadways from the East. It was a vacation spot for wealthy Chicagoans displaced by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

It is probably best known internationally for being home to the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory, which houses the world's largest refracting (lens) telescope, the great 40-inch. Construction of the Observatory began in 1895 and the 40-inch saw first light in May 1897. The Observatory's first Director was George Ellery Hale, who went on to establish Mount Wilson Observatory in Southern California.

Officials and students of Chicago-based George Williams College frequently met just west of the town of Williams Bay and later established a camp in the village on the shores of Geneva Lake. George Williams College folded in 1985 and is now part of Aurora University, which today maintains the campus.

Wausaukee, Wisconsin

Wausaukee is a Menominee word that means “river in the hills.”[6] The town was started in 1863 by John S. Monroe, who bought 160 acres of land from business tycoon Lars Kovala and built a mill to supply the railroads with lumber for bridges and culverts.[6] His first building was a log cabin home that was also used to board the mill workers. As the town grew and more settlers moved in, his log cabin grew into an inn that was the only public eating establishment north of Green Bay.[6]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.41 square miles (3.65 km2), of which, 1.40 square miles (3.63 km2) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 575 people, 275 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 410.7 inhabitants per square mile (158.6/km2). There were 325 housing units at an average density of 232.1 per square mile (89.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.7% White, 1.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.8% of the population.

Wilmot Mountain

Wilmot Mountain is a ski area in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. It is located in the Census-designated place of Wilmot and lies in both the Town of Randall and the Town of Salem, just north of the Illinois border. Located in the southern region of Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine, Wilmot Mountain is the result of glaciation. The self-proclaimed "Matterhorn of the Midwest" was founded by Walter Stopa in 1938 after a thorough research of the area’s topography. It has a vertical drop of about 200 feet (60 m).[1] It is also one of the few hills where the mountain is wide open, with few trees or barriers to crossing the hill. A skier can transverse several runs while skiing downhill. Night skiing is available on the entire hill.

Wilmot Mountain is located 40 miles south-southwest of Milwaukee and 55 miles (90 km) north of Chicago. The Stopa Family were the owners and operators from February 1938 to January 2016. Vail Resorts purchased the resort in early 2016. Vail Resorts completed about $13 million in renovations in 2016. Most days small aircraft from the nearby Westosha airport can be seen high above, circling the hill.

Wilmot Mountain caters to skiers, snowboarders, and snow tubers. The new snow tubing facility opened in 2012 with twenty tubing lanes over 1,000 feet (300 m) in length, and a state-of-the-art covered conveyor lift. A brand new lodge houses the ticket sales, food and beverage options, rental items, conference rooms, and banquet facilities.

Viola, Wisconsin

Viola is a village in Richland (mostly) and Vernon Counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 699 at the 2010 census. Of this, 477 were in Richland County, and 222 were in Vernon County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), of which, 1.00 square mile (2.59 km2) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.[1] The zip code is 54664.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 699 people, 279 households, and 184 families residing in the village. The population density was 699.0 inhabitants per square mile (269.9/km2). There were 331 housing units at an average density of 331.0 per square mile (127.8/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.6% White, 0.6% African American, 0.3% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.6% of the population.

Wautoma, Wisconsin

The city consists of three noncontiguous areas: one is entirely within the Town of Wautoma, the second is entirely within the Town of Dakota, and the third straddles the boundary between the two towns.

Wautoma calls itself the "Christmas tree capital of the world".[5][6][7][8] The Kirk Company of Tacoma, Washington, operated the "Wautoma plantation" of more than 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) of Christmas trees, beginning in 1953.[9]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,218 people, 945 households, and 487 families residing in the city. The population density was 827.6 inhabitants per square mile (319.5/km2). There were 1,061 housing units at an average density of 395.9 per square mile (152.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 88.3% White, 1.4% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 6.3% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.8% of the population.

Wilson, Wisconsin

Viroqua, Wisconsin

The Native American Ho-Chunk inhabited the area now known as Vernon County and the area of Viroqua. The Ho-Chunk, formerly known as the Winnebago, are a Siouan-speaking people who lived in the western Great Lakes region for thousands of years. The Ho-Chunk were removed westward beginning in the 1820s.[4]

There was a sharp rivalry between Viroqua and Springville to be named the county seat of Vernon County. A deed for 40 acres (160,000 m2) of land was promised by pioneer Moses Decker, on condition that Viroqua be chosen as the county seat. The land constituted what became known as the County Addition to the city of Viroqua.[5]

Decker was one of the early settlers in the area. He arrived in 1847 and laid out the village of Viroqua. He died in 1860.[6] Earlier settlers arrived in 1844 and built lumber mills on the Kickapoo River. Farmers began arriving in 1846, some of whom were John Graham, T.J. Defreese and William C. McMichael.[7]
